Situated within the Colorado Desert, Mecca‘s climate is that of an arid desert with an average 90 degree temperature annually. The community sits at 150 feet below sea level on the edge of the Salton Sea, formerly called the Salton Sink. In an attempt to bring water to the desert as irrigation, land developers re-routed the Colorado River not foreseeing the immense power of that river so for two years, from 1905-1906, the entirety of the river flooded the land to form the Salton Sea. Salt mines that had been a source of salt for centuries were covered by this new sea. Water transported via the American Canal was used to transform the desert environment into large swaths of agricultural land. The Salton Sea, adjacent to Mecca covers an area of 343 miles.
